Mathematical Simulation of the Consumer's Influence of Nitrogen Circulation in a Model Aquatic System

T. I. PISMAN, I. M. SHIROBOKOVA, Ya. V. GALAIDA

Abstract

An experimental and theoretical study of a closed aquatic ecosystem "producer - consumer" (Chlorella vulgaris - Paramecium caudatum) has been cattied out. The experiment was made on an installation with spatially divided units which consisted of a reactor for Chlorella cultivation (the "producer" unit) and a reactor for paramecia (the " consumer" unit). A direct relation between the paramecia reproduction with chlorella consumption and nitrogen release in ammonium form which is the most preferable for the growth of chlorella has been found. As a result of the theoretical study of the aquatic biotic "producer - consumer" cycle with spatially divided units, a contribution of paramecia to the nitrogen circulation is confirmed. It is demonstrated that simultaneously with the increase of concentration of nitrogen released due to metabolism of paramecia, an increase of productivity of microalgae takes place.
