The paper analyzes the issues of the value systems both in Russian and American educational systems. Education is considered as a timely,constantly developing phenomenon in the globalized society. Considering education within the context of culture, the authordistinguishes its specific cultural functions. The author substantiates the importance of education which is implemented to a great extent within the competence approach aimed at practical application of the acquired knowledge and skills. There is shown an alternative to the value clash in education, which is realized in the process of formation of a tolerant society.
