Abstract
For a long time, the developed countries have been successfully introducing the competency-based approach (CBA) in the education system. In many works published in Russia, there are given incorrect definitions to the concept of competence, which plays an important role in CBA; this significantly hinders the introduction of CBA into the education system of Russia. The author tries to correct this, offering a definition of this concept.
