Abstract
In the article, various approaches to the concept of understanding in psychology are analyzed, and the definitions of understanding and the level of understanding are formulated which can be used in pedagogy and education. The typology of tasks on prevailing type of thinking is given and the diagnostics of the levels of the understanding necessary for solving the tasks from the school textbooks is considered.
