Abstract
Gender ideology in the Japanese society is considered, main features of the gender system in Japan are named. It is the purpose of the article to analyze features of gender relations in conditions of transition from traditional (very rigid) society to their modern type set by the western civilization. Male and female stereotypes in patriarchal traditional society of Japan and those main trends that transform roles of men and women in the modern world are set out and discussed.
