The article points out the leading role of education in the implementation of the model of sustainable development. Considering the ecological imperative as its methodological basis, the author reveals the essence of environmental ethics – a new field of social and human knowledge, which studies the behavior and activities of the human being in nature and their most important regulators. One form of implementation of its ideas into the practice of civilization is the environmental law; and the environmental and legal competence is the most important indicator of the national culture. In the transition to sustainable development, its formation is becoming one of the strategic objectives of education.
