To paraphrase a quote from one of the great theater directors,Meyerhold, “the word is born at the end of a gesture”, we can express this idea as: “Gesture is the beginning of the word.” The paper considers gesture in the historical aspect, and as part of contemporary culture. Its importance as a symbolic means of culture is analyzed through the prism of theater. A special attention is given to the art of pantomime.
