Abstract
The article represents the basic directions of professional and social activity of the rural intelligentsia, related to dissemination of education in the rural areas, which combined the all-Russian trends and the regional specificity. In the conclusions the author points to the problems which intellectuals faced while educating the peasants, indicates the achievements of intellectuals in the educational activity.
