Application of Mechanical Activation to the Synthesis of the Carbonate Form of Layered Double Mg-Al Hydroxides

Abstract

It is demonstrated that mechanical activation of a mixture of Mg(OH)2, Al(OH)3 and Na2CO3 in the planetary activator AGO-2 followed by water treatment of activation products leads to the formation of the Mg-Al layered double hydroxide. Single-phase double Mg-Al hydroxide is formed if the initial Mg(OH)2/Al(OH)3 molar ratio is within the range 1.5/1-4/1. Both carbonate and hydrocarbonate anions are present in the interlayer space. The synthesized samples of the double hydroxide were characterized by means of XPA, TG, DTA and chemical analysis.
