Abstract

Measurement of heavy precipitation intensity remains an unresolved problem, particularly by common radar methods. The application of dual-polarization radars provides a solution to this issue. This paper presents a comparative analysis of heavy precipitation measurements by traditional radar method and a new approach based on specific differential phase measurements. Precipitation measurements with a DMRL-C radar and Pluvio2 200 weighing precipitation gauges were performed in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region on July 1, 2023. To calculate precipitation intensity ( R ) from radar data, Z h- R relationships ( Z h is the reflectivity at horizontally polarization) based on the Marshall-Palmer equations and measurements of the specific differential phase ( K dp) were used. These data were compared with measurements from the precipitation gauge network. The comparison showed a high correlation between precipitation intensity measured by gauges and R ( K dp) and no correlation with R ( Z h). According to precipitation gauge network, the average precipitation intensity was 52 mm/h and the maximal intensity was 186 mm/h on July 1, 2023. The results of this study can be used to improve heavy precipitation measurement methodologies and to estimate fluxes of extreme rainfall in northwest of the Russian Federation.
