Abstract
The article discusses the postulates underlying the phenomenological theory of the induced electrical polarization (IP) in geological materials. According to one of these, polarization currents are always directed opposite the polarizing currents generated by the current source. Furthermore, it is claimed that the electric field in a polarizing material is equal to the sum of the primary and IP fields. Time-domain measurements demonstrate that these assumptions are inconsistent with electrical circuit theory and do not provide a correct explanation for the IP manifestation. An alternative explanation, taking into account electrical circuit theory and based on the fact that electrical resistivity of polarizing media depends on time/frequency, is free from this inconsistency.
