Abstract
The authors analyze the development trends of distance education in its interrelations with the development of the society of knowledge. These trends are examined in connection with the objective vectors of development of the society and technology. The specificity and potential of distance education and virtual distance education are shown in the article. The relations are analyzed between the foreign electronic educational resources and the national educational sovereignty of Russia. The challenges for the domestic educational market are described. The path to support the competitiveness and development of the domestic distance education is outlined.
