Abstract
The paper deals with basic theoretical and methodological approaches as well as concepts of Siberian history offered by Western scholars in the XX century (“Russian eastward expansion”, “colonization”, “modernization”, theories of “heartland” and “frontier”). The author comes to conclusion that in Western scholarship there has been no dominating methodological precepts or common patterns of Siberian history shared by all researches. Certain contradictions in the Siberian historiography were resolved on a basis of thorough analysis of sources which allowed achieving a qualitatively new level in Siberian studies.
