Abstract
The article presents an analysis of the formation of humanitarian education in European education during the Renaissance period. The social and cultural aspects are examined that prompted the changes in the intellectual life and were the reasons for the foundation of humanitarian education. The author considers this process in some areas of the university tradition (the departments of liberal arts) as well as in the activity of humanist societies, which changed the goals and the meaning of the European educational system.
