The criteria of philosophy are discussed which would allow to work out whether or not it is possible to do philosophy in the works of art (Tolstoy and Dostoevsky are considered).

Abstract
When philosophy in literature is examined, usual well-defined criteria of philosophy are not used. The problem is that this approach undermines the very concept of philosophy. The author uses three criteria to identify philosophy which are reflexion, principal openness, and manifestation by words. He demonstrates that according to these criteria Tolstoy (contrary to Dostoevsky) is not a philosopher. The author presents a set of criteria which allow not to mix philosophy with literature and other areas of human consciousness.
