Abstract
The author analyzes the role of mathematical knowledge in the formation of the ideas about one of the central characteristics of the Western civilization, rationality. The influence of historically arising ideals of mathematical knowledge on the conceptions about the characteristics of rationality is considered. At the same time, historicity and variability of understanding of the nature of mathematical knowledge, their connection with philosophical systems and their general cultural influence are analyzed.
