Abstract

The concept of “growth-development” (development, treated in a special sense of “growth”) is central in Dewey’s philosophy of education, being incorporated in his ontology, epistemology, ethics, and social theory. This fact was interpreted in different ways with different implications for the theory and practice of education. In Russia, fascinated by the project method associated with Dewey’s ideas, this concept has not yet received sufficient attention. However, the concept of “growth-development”, having critical importance for understanding of these ideas in their depth and foundations, potentially has in itself not only possible insights but also some problems. These issues are discussed in the article and receive original author’s interpretation.
