Abstract
During life-time Makarenko as innovator-educator was criticized from the left and right. He was accused of enthusiasm of pre-revolutionary pedagogy, striving for approval of authoritarianism, discipline. Since the late 80 s there were numerous publications where attempts had been made to assess creativity of Makarenko with contemporary positions. However, the question about the place of Makarenko in pedagogical theory and practice is remained debatable.
