Abstract
The aim of the article is to raise and consider the issue of the optimum relation between fundamental and vocational training in the modern system of higher education. Its other goal is to outline the determining role and influence of training on the development of an advanced society. The main theme of the article is to describe a model of the harmoniously developed person as a target ideal of the educational process. In this work the harmoniously developed person is understood as the unity of the developed scientific outlook, high moral-ethical level, aesthetic development, deep professional knowledge and physical health. Social progress is understood by the authors as the progress of the society with respect to the same coordinates.
