Abstract
The article deals with the present-day tendencies in the development of higher professional education. The importance of applying the competence-based approach to the system of professional training is discussed. There are outlined the pedagogical conditions for implementing the competence-based approach such as learner-centered education, subject-subject relationship between students and teachers, reflective character of the goal-setting procedures, modular principle in syllabus design and importance of self-study. A special emphasis is on the importance to develop the competence for self-development and self-education in order to sustain and develop the professional competences.
