Abstract
The present article deals with a fundamental work of A.I. Levshin «Description of Kirghiz-Cossack or Kirghiz-Kaisatsk hordes and steppes», published in 1832. The work is often cited by the researchers so it proves the book's relevance and importance for studying history and culture of Kazakhstan. Its author presents different archival materials, the results of his field surveys, gives a detailed geographical description of Kazakhstan. For the first time in historiography he referred to the issues of the Kazakhs ethnogeny, their material and spiritual culture. Levshin's book has been an important source of data on politics, economy, culture and family life of the Kazakhs.
